Takoma Park, MD, a city of 17,000 in Joe Biden’s home state, has voted to lower the voting age for city elections to 16.
On Monday, May 20, the Takoma Park City Council agreed to allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in city elections starting in November. In a display of Progressive unity, they voted 6-1. The one councilmember who voted against the measure wanted the issue put to referendum. Maybe he was hoping that the adult voters in the community would have more common sense than his peers on the council. Or maybe he was just hoping to duck the ridicule this decision richly deserves.
The council also voted to allow convicted felons who have served their time to vote.
Councilman Tim Male, who voted for the measure, told a local TV station that elected officials are trying to make it possible for more people to be part of the city government. The law takes effect in 50 days.
So this November, voters can expect to see their share of high school children in the adjacent booths. We can only hope the kids won’t sneak a peek at the adults’ ballots the same way they try to see the answers to each other’s math quizzes.
