You truly can't beat a classic, and nothing proves that more than sweet Buttermilk Pie. This pie recipe may only require a few simple ingredients, but delivers a flaky crust and sweet custard filling that rivals even the fanciest of desserts. Think of crème brûlée, but so much easier. A staple Southern dessert, this recipe is easy (and satisfying) enough to serve up last-minute for any potluck or holiday gathering.
What is buttermilk pie? What makes it different than chess pie?
Buttermilk pie is a traditional Southern dessert that goes back for generations, but most likely originated in England. As far as the taste, typically when you think of pie, you might envision a delicious fruit filling — not here. A buttermilk pie has a simple custard-like filling thanks to eggs, buttermilk, and sugar. It's very similar to the custard-filled Chess Pie, but without the cornmeal and with added vanilla and lemon juice.
Do you need to make your own pie crust for buttermilk pie?
Absolutely not—store-bought pie crust works fin. But, we think our classic homemade pie crust is pretty amazing.
How long does buttermilk pie last in the fridge?
You can keep baked buttermilk pie stored with plastic wrap or in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge.
What if I don't have buttermilk?
Buying buttermilk can be annoying when a recipe only calls for a small amount of it (although, you can use the rest of make amazing buttermilk pancakes or banana bread.) If you don't have any on hand, here's how to make a buttermilk substitute.

Ingredients
- 1
premade or homemade pie crust
- 3
eggs
- 1 1/2 c.
sugar
- 1/2 c.
butter, melted and cooled
- 3 tbsp.
flour
- 1 c.
buttermilk
- 1 tbsp.
lemon juice
- 1 tsp.
vanilla
- 1 tsp.
kosher salt
Directions
- Step 1Preheat oven to 400°. Place pie crust in a 9" baking dish. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until fully combined. Add remaining ingredients and whisk until all are fully incorporated. Pour into pie crust.
- Step 2 Place in oven and bake 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 350° and bake until slightly golden and barely jiggly, 40 minutes more.
