With May serving up not one, but THREE Bank Holiday weekends, including the Corrie Bobs (aka King Charles' coronation), it's the perfect excuse to have a glass of Pimm’s permanently in your hand.
Pimm’s isn’t just for Wimbledon, it's for any moment the sun decides to peek from behind the clouds (even if it's only for an hour or two).
What is Pimm’s?
Pimm’s is a gin-based fruity spirit. A quintessentially British liqueur, it’s made by infusing gin with a secret concoction of botanicals, caramelised orange and warm spices.
Originally blended by James Pimm as an aid to digesting oysters in 1840, Pimm’s was also sent out to soldiers, served at Queen Victoria's lunches, and ended up making its debut at Wimbledon in 1971.
What's in a Pimm's?
The beauty of Pimm’s is that you can make it up with whatever chopped fruit and herbs you want, but traditionally it’s mixed with lemonade, mint, strawberries, orange, and cucumber.
What does Pimm's taste like?
A classic jug of Pimm's will mainly taste fruity, with some mild flavours of spice.
Can I drink Pimm's on its own?
Much like Aperol, fans of the fruity spirit tend to enjoy it teamed with a mixer like lemonade or ginger ale, but that's not to say you can't drink it straight over ice.
Can you make a non-alcoholic Pimm's?
Unfortunately for us budding boozeless enthusiasts, Pimm's are yet to come out with a non-alcoholic version. Although, you can of course try making your own! Go to town with lots of fresh fruit and a high-quality lemonade. For that bitter hit, try adding a splash of balsamic vinegar (don't knock it until you've tried it).
How to make Pimm’s
A Pimm’s cup is made with one part Pimm’s No. 1 to three parts lemonade, in a highball glass filled with lots of ice and garnished with the aforementioned. However, for me Pimm’s is a TOTAL sharing drink, so make up a big batch for your summer party so you’re not constantly playing bartender. The recipe below is great for about 8 servings.
What if I don't like Pimm's?
If the flavour just isn't for you, have you tried Pimm's Sundowner? With flavours of redcurrant and raspberry, this is best served over ice - equal parts Pimm's and Prosecco, and topped up with soda water. A bit like a Pimm's-esque Aperol.
Twists on Pimm's
If you want to make more than just a classic Pimm's cup, you *need* to try our Pink Lemonade Pimm's Slushies or a delightful Pimm's Spritz. We also can't get enough of our Pimm's Margaritas and Pimm's Martinis.
Or how about adding it into your bakes? Our Pimm's Doughnuts are absolutely delicious, as is our Pimm's Eton Mess with Prosecco-infused strawberries.
